msmsgs.exe constantly runs on my PC. I can't figure out what is calling it to start up, and when I try to exit, it says it can't because an application is still using it... this happens even when no apps are running. If I end-task it, it starts right back up again, within 2-3 seconds. I've renamed it ms_msgs.exe so that whatever is calling it to start couldn't find it. Now in the event manager it gives some sort of DCOM error related to msmsgs. Any ideas anyone?

TIA,
Bill

Try running:
-A Spyware program, like Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 or Lavasoft's Ad-aware 6.0
-An Anti-Virus program, like AntiVir or AVG AntiVirus
-A Registry Repair program, like Registry Mechanic or WinASO's Registry Optimizer

If your problem still isn't fixed after you've tried all 3 types of those programs, come back and tell me.

(P.S. You can find most of those programs at http://www.download.com)

I use messenger, but infrequently. I have no idea why it wants to keep starting itself. In Outlook 2003, I have it set to not log into messenger, but I don't find any setting about it starting up that process.. and the program starts with windows, upon boot. It is not in MSCONFIG, nor is it in my registry as a startup program. I routinely run Spybot S&D, adAware, and spyware blaster. I update & run them regularly. My PC is clean, and it's actually a fairly fresh install (couple weeks old re-install on formatted & fdisked drive). I have NAV2004 & it updates regularly. I am fully updated as per windowsupdate.

i noticed that msmsgs.exe always starts up when i open Outlook 2k3 and Outlook express. No virus, no sh*tware, just a ploy by M$ to consolidate all your email, text, IM to one neat package. May be wrong tho...

I found this answer in another forum:

Start / Run / services.msc

Stop the Messenger service and set it to Disabled.

Simple as that! I love Google!!

I'm really amazed that it was this far down the thread before someone got it right...

START/RUN/MSCONFIG may stop it, but it will recheck itself at reboot. like Nasty said, disable the SERVICE.

oh, btw....

this has NOTHING to do with the MSN MESSENGER Instant Messenger program, it's a pop-up network messenging utility; disabling it will have NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on ANY other program (.NET or otherwise).

MSMSGS is the windows messenger, not the MSN version. If you dont use messenger, you can boot to safe mode and delete the messenger folder from the program files folder. Thats how i do it on my pc and all the new ones i work on, works great, never loads again, lol.

You can also run MSNCONFIG and disable it under RUNNING SERVICES.

This is the windows messenger as has been said, and tweakXP has an article on how to remove it from your system: http://tweakxp.com/display.aspx?id=487

That will physically remove it and its library file from the system, so be sure you don't use or need it before you do this.

*edit* here is another for disabling it: http://tweakxp.com/display.aspx?id=585
