Saturday my laptop worked great. I hardly ever use it without the ac adapter. Well, Saturday night I came to boot it up again and...nothing. It starts to boot, the fan spins and the drive start spinning as well, then it shuts down, and then it starts booting itself again and shuts down and it would keep repeating this unless I unplug it and take the battery out. This has me stumped.

How old is the laptop?

I assume you mean without the laptop battery in the laptop boots fine on AC power? If so replace the battery.

Laptop batteries only have about 300-500 charge cycles in them. Every time you boot up it can cycle. The battery may be DOA, but I would have thought your power monitor would have shown diminishing battery capacity.

I will admit different laptops seem to have different behaviors when it comes to battery in/AC in/battery out/AC out combinations.

If battery replacement resolves the problem I would leave the battery out (and stored at ~40% charge) until you need it---then charge it up. This should prolong battery life though it is a pain. At least the lappy weighs less with the battery out.

Take the battery out and check the voltage with a VOM. The value should be on a label on the battery. Check the voltage of the wall wart and see if it is up to snuff too.

Sometimes the charge port receptacle works loose on the motherboard and has to be re-soldered.

I should have been more specific. It does not boot up at all. It just goes into this cycle or attempting to boot, then it turns off and repeat. In order to stop it from doing this I have to unplug it and remove the battery. I will check the voltage coming from the ac power pack. It's about 4 -1/2 years old. I typically don't pay attention to the power level display as I use it pluggee in 99% of the time.

Actually a note about using voltmeters to check batteries. You have to check them under load. Batteries can still retain an open circuit voltage that looks near 100% even when it's almost dead.

One more thing for OP: Does the laptop power on just fine if you do what you're doing, but without the battery in the laptop?

No. It does not. Regardless of what I do, it goes into that cycle that I explained. I was actually going to put the voltmeter to the ac cord.

If you have a bad cell...as gone south the voltage reading will be lower whether it is under load or not. I just wanted to see if the battery was bad.

OP, check the output side of the wall wart not the 120 volt side.

Part of me has this crazy idea that the RAM is bad, and it doesn't effectively reset itself until all power is gone. I only say this because I had bad RAM that only showed itself when the computer went to sleep, and it would do a restart cycle on wakeup until I held the power button to shut it off.

But you know, crazy idea.

I tested the voltage coming out of the ac power pack and it is reading 18.8V.

OK, what does the battery read? It should be the same.

What type of battery does it have? Nicad .... what?

Actually...
  • The input to the computer may be higher than what the battery is rated for. Check the battery's voltage rating first. As an example, the MacBook Pro has a 10.95V battery, but the MagSafe charger spits out 16.5V
  • The charger should have slightly higher voltage anyway, because the battery is still plugged into an electrical circuit. If you're not pushing electrons harder than the battery is trying to, you're not going to charge it. You can think of it like a water tower trying to fill up another water tower with gravity. A tower that's lower in elevation isn't really going to fill up the other tower.

He probably has a 14 volt battery or there abouts.

Well, the output which is printed on the outbox is 18.8V, so that right.

Ok, here is probably a really dumb question. If this is the original battery that came with it, and the original charger, then what does it matter what is on the battery? Also, if the laptop is plugged into the wall, isn't the laptop suppose to use that power while the battery charges? Kind of like a bypass?

And if I read your post correctly up there, you've tried this without the battery at all, and it still did a restart cycle.

That rules out the battery right away.

I'm still sticking to my crazy idea it's RAM.

Is there any way to reset the CMOS? That may be the problem.

I'll check the CMOS, and is there a way to check the RAM? I have been wanting to add more anyway.

There is, with MemTest. But if it's a power issue, it might not show up.
