 Post subject: SATA HD Assistance, And RAM....

Hey all. I have been running a 80GB PATA drive forever and just needed some more space, so I threw in a 750GB SATA drive, added a 4400+ X2 proc (replacing the 4200+) and put in 4 1gb sticks of Patriot memory.

Couple things, the SATA drive is in and I can see it with PCWizard as well as in the Device Properties, but it's not listed next to my C: drive in My Computer. I have no way to actually access it :(

Also, I checked my motherboard specs before buying the RAM, and it said it could do up to 4GB, 1GB times 4, but it's only showing up as 3.25GB.... Any ideas?

  • You have to format your hard drive before it'll show up. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management. You should see your disk there with an unused block of space.
    • Alternatively, you could be lacking SATA drivers.
  • The amount of RAM available to 32-bit OS's is actually 4GB minus the memory that all other devices on your computer use (your video card for instance has its own memory, which the CPU uses the same address space to address). If you want to use all 4GB, you'll have to use a 64-bit OS.
