I have a dell vostro 1510. The motheboard went bad so I replaced it and did a clean install of Vista Basic from the Dell built in image partition. Now my keys on the lower row Z-X-C-V-B-N-M are not working correctly. What I mean about that is Z=X, X=C etc..... It was very strange. they are shifted one key to the left. Shift key works correctly it seems to be only the letters on the row. I plugged an external usb keyboard in and it works fine.

During setup did you choose US keyboard?

The only fix is to buy Windows 8. IMOK

Very strange indeed, you simply must have erroneously selected some obscure language upon installation.

Considering a USB keyboard works just fine, I highly doubt that.

Just get one of these and call it a day: http://www.amazon.com/J483C-Keyboard-Vo ... B0032GTNG6

Maybe he should uninstall the keyboard in Device manager and let windows restore it upon reboot.

That may fix the problem.

When you say during setup does that mean during the reinstall of Vista from the Dell Image? I did choose all the US options. Whe I check regional setting is says US. I am guessing those options are fine. Is there another place I should be checking? I did try the uninstall and let it find it on reboot. Still didn't work.

I did already purchase a new keyboard and that didn't fix it.

Are you positive you got all the plugs in when you reassembled the machine. You may have a bent pin under a connector.

Is there an option in the bios for the keyboard...ya never know with OEMs what they are thinking.

I would call Dell and see if the motherboard they sent you is the cause of your issue.

I'd give Nastyman's idea a try. It is a good one. [edit: the one above at 7:32am, not the one immediately above where he beat me out by a minute, lol, which are good thoughts too.]

My guess would be the MB you installed is not an identical match to the prior one and the Dell Win7 Basic OS disk drivers (for the old one) are not quite correct.

You can also try FixIt and if that fails the couple of applicable suggestions (which on first glance appear to be Nastyman's response and one other responder's query).

The Dell Vostro is a pretty easy motherboard switch and not a lot of connectors to mess with so I am sure I didn't mess them up but it only takes 15 to switch it so I can take it back apart and take a look. I did download the driver for the keyboard from Dell's website just in case it was different. It still didn't fix it. I clean the ribbon cable connection area and the ribbon cable connector thinking it wasn't making a good connection.

For some reason the pin-out on the new motherboard may not be compatible with the old connector ribbon....again give them a call and explain the issue, they may have a fix we can't find on the net.

I wonder if the keyboard snafu that dell had has anything to do with this. There was an issue where the keys were not in the right position, was supposed to have affected UK versions only. Basically every key was shifted to the right one letter. I wonder if someone popped the keys off and repositioned them, or if a replacement keyboard was obtained, but now its not compatible with the new motherboard.

Here is a link to what the problem was

Its actually quite a common issue with those laptops. They were supplied with miss-aligned keyboards
