Hello everyone. I built my PC about 6 years ago and about a year ago I upgraded the single core processor to a dual core processor, but did not upgrade the stock CPU fan that came with my original single core processor. I didn't have any issues for a while, but I also wasn't pushing the processor very hard. Lately I've been pushing the processor and the processor's been overheating crashing my system.

At first I thought I just didn't apply the thermal paste properly so I reapplied it and that seemed to fix the issue. However in the past few weeks the system has been crashing more. I've tried reapplying the thermal paste, but normally that will only solve the issue for a short period of time. I'm not sure if my problem is I'm not applying the thermal paste correctly or if my CPU fan just isn't enough to handle the additional heat from the dual core processor. I'm interested in your options and if it's the heatsink can anyone recommend a decent cheap one since I'm planning on getting a new PC in a few months.

My current processor is:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 ADA4200DAA5BV Socket 939 2X512KB 2.2GH

Thanks

You answered your own question by stating you are using a single core heatsink/fan to cool a dual core processor....that is you problem! Now get a proper fan/heatsink for it. You may have damaged the processor.....don't know until you get a proper heat solution on that processor.

I'm more curious about what processor the stock heat sink was for. As long as the heat sink met the TDP requirement, it should be fine.

It was for his old single core processor.

Some of AMD's single core processors had the same TDP requirements as their dual core...

Either way it wouldn't matter, I don't like stock cooling anyway.
