I have a 500GB WD Caviar Blue that suddenly started to go batcrap on me, and I'm basically wondering if it's dead now given the following:

  • Windows couldn't delete one partition. It flutters about before it tells me a bad CRC error
  • Linux could delete the entire drive of its formatting, but when I try to format it, it can't (either with FAT, NTFS, or one of the ext variants)
  • I polled its SMART data, the only one that was a tale tale sign the drive is failing is the "Relocation event count" value was high.

Otherwise, the drive doesn't suffer from the click of death or any other mechanical issues, as far as I can hear.

Have you tried running Western Digital's own hard drive diagnostics software to determine this?

I'm with pcstudent. But it does appear that it's dying, at least to me.

It failed diagnostics.

But the good news is, it's still under warranty :D

In my experience if you find one of the following five, in order of misery, you're in trouble...

1. Strange noises - Sometimes hearing strange grinding and thrashing noises means your drive is beyond repair—for instance, if you’ve had a head crash, it very often is. Or it could just be that the motor has failed or your hard drive is grinding away because of noisy bearings. If you’re hearing strange noises then act quickly, very quickly—you probably don’t have much time.

2. Disappearing data and disk errors - The application won’t let you save a file - Or you’re sure that you had a file on your desktop yesterday that’s nowhere to be seen today? Programs that always worked suddenly stop working, asking where a file it depends on is stored?

3. Your computer stops recognizing the drive - This may seem obvious, but if your OS no longer recognizes your drive chances are there’s a problem with it, not the computer. Test it in a friend’s computer and see if your hard drive is recognized by it. Often, this will be a logical failure—unless you can hear strange noises that indicate a severe mechanical or head problem.

4. Computer crashes of any sort - Does your PC regularly blue-screen or suddenly reboot? Does it crash often, especially when booting your operating system? If your machine is crashing, especially at times when the computers is accessing files (such as during the boot sequence), it may indicate a problem with your drive.

5. Really slow access times - it shouldn’t take half an hour to open a folder, or two hours to empty the trash. I’ve come across this problem plenty of times over the years, and it’s always followed by a failing hard drive within a month or two.
