My neighbor called me up to help remove two of the three antivirus programs that his son installed on his computer. My first - and stupidest words were, "this should be quick and simple."

Wrong thing to say.

The uninstall/remove programs did not seem to be working, so I downloaded Revo Uninstaller and removed the offending programs. The problem is that now the beast only boots up in safe mode and refuses to start any other way. Any suggestions on how best to remedy this?

it sounds like the OS got borked.

if you have an XP disc..i would pop that in and do a repair install.

out of curiosity what AV programs were installed, and which ones did you remove?

Microsoft Security essentials, Avast plus a third that I can't recall. The only one that survived the AV cull was MSE.

Before I go the repair route, I may try a system restore, but I really don't hold out a lot of hope of that working. The one up side is that all of the documents and pictures were stored on a second HD, so reinstalling the OS should be a snap.
