I am running Xp sp3 on one of my machines and it has been fine until a few days ago when at boot or waking from hibernation it is in crawl mode for at least 8-10 minutes and then starts to work good again. Today it started to slow down to a near stop for a few minutes then start working again.
My first idea was a virus, I am running Norton 360 and windows defender continuously and have scanned with Spybot, Super Antispyware and Malwarebytes with nothing showing. I have since noticed in the task manager that there is a ccsvchst exe. (system) that runs up to 350,000 mem usage when the problem occurs then it drops back down to around 14,000 and the pc starts to work again.
I have no idea as to what this exe is so I don't want to stop it. Is there a way to figure out what to do with this and fix it? or any other ideas would be appreciated.

It is to do with Nortons. Have you gone to Nortons support site and use the tool to fix your program?

Personally I hate Nortons and McFee, I would remove it/them. I removed them from all my computers at home along with all my family and friends computers at home and at their businesses, then I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. No more slowdowns ever.

No I have not gone to Norton, like i said I had no ideas what it was, now that you told me that I definitely will check it out.

I looked up the windows security essentials and is it correct that it is free?

Thanx for the info

Yes, MSE is free. And you should get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for an additional layer of security.
