My parents recently put a new battery into their laptop. When they charged it completely and then tried turning it on , it only ran for a few seconds before shutting down. What I have learned so far is that the battery in question was already a year old. I suggested that they try the old battery to see if they could even run their computer and now I believe they said it won't run anymore.

What's up?

Pull the battery completely out and run just off the wall power. The laptop should run that way, if it wont, then there is a problem. Have them blow it out with compressed air.

If the thing won't run off of a battery anymore, more than likely there is a problem with the DC power harness in the laptop. Is it still under warranty?

I think my Dad said they tried going off power and it didn't work either. They almost always had it on the AC line besides the few times a year we went camping.

I'll run this by him and see what else he has tried. I have suggested charging the new battery again , going off AC , trying the old battery. But if it still doesn't work I'll check back here.

I guess my Dad figured it out. As pcstudent pointed out , it was indeed the AC adapter. It was only putting out 9v instead of 19v so we got a new one. Thanks for the help!
