Hello all:

Today I went to copy some files into a newly created folder on my secondary hard drive when I looked inside the folder and it was filled with corrupted data. I ran chkdsk and it deleted the folder but insisted everything was ok. I tried again and the same thing happened. So then I created a new folder and left the name as "New Folder." Everything was fine. I renamed it and got corrupted data again. I ran chkdsk again with /r, and it still said everything was fine. I then created a New Folder called "New Folder" again and copied a file into it, and I got more data corruption.

Writing to existing folders seems to work fine.

Any suggestions? Disk Checkup also insists everything is good.

EDIT: Okay, the problem seems to be limited to new folders created in Windows Explorer. New folders created with cmd work fine, however the problem with Explorer is also limited to that drive.

Try SFC /SCANNOW in the run box, you may have corrupt windows files.

Try running memtest86+ to check the ram, one stick at a time.

Running sfc /verifynow didn't return anything I didn't expect and I let memtest run for two passes and it didn't show anything.

Did you check the second hard drive with its diagnostic tool to see if it is dieing?

Seagate SeaTools says it passes all tests.

The only other thing I can think of is the cpu is tossing errors. This is very rare...so I think maybe call the people that made the cpu and ask if it would manifest this type of issue if it was faulty.

Look at the voltages in the bios and see if they are at the correct levels. A psu can cause all manner of problems if the voltages are out of spec.

I checked the BIOS voltages and they looked good. (My CPU vcore was about 1.2; I'm not sure what its supposed to be.)

I have a hard time believing that a bad CPU could be this consistent, but if you think its a good ideal I guess I can throw a round of Prime95 at it.

My CPU is an AMD Athlon II X2 245.

Do you always get the data corruption on the second drive when you change the name of the folder, or does this happen on your main drive as well?

Have you tried to change out the data cable on the second drive, just to eliminate it being the issue?

Have you tried to use a different sata port on the motherboard?

Only the secondary drive has issues.

I haven't tried switching out cables yet.

Its actually a PATA drive and I only have one port on my mobo.

Try a different data cable.

It could be a bad pata chip on the motherboard or the port is defective.

I would call the motherboard manufacture and see what they say.

I stuck the drive in another machine and it did the same thing. I'm guessing the controller on the drive went bad?

Yup, sounds right to me. We wouldn't have know until you did that.... good move.
