I haven't tried the linksys router yet. It's a wrt54gs. The router I'm using now is a generic brand called smc. I got it free from Comcast. It's a wireless n whereas the linksys is only wireless g. And quite a few years older. Just wondering what people would think would be better. Even though the linksys is quite a.bit older, I figured it would be more reliable. I run netflix through my Wii and sometimes there are quite a few hiccups.

Are there any firmware updates available for the SMC router? If not, I would recommend using the older (and more reliable) Linksys wireless-G router. I have had one for nearly four years and it is still going strong. I also purchased an older version of the WRT54G and installed it at my uncle's place when he finally got broadband in northern Kansas a few years ago, and it is also going strong. Wireless-N routers are still not quite up to speed (no pun intended) as far as I am concerned as the final standard for wireless-N is only a couple of years old, and manufacturers still seem to be having trouble matching the reliability of routers that support up to wireless-G specs.

I was just thinking maybe you should call Comcast and tell them the router drops out during streaming movies. You paid for that router through the Comcast service, nothing is for free from those guys.

Nasty

Am having pretty much the same issue as d-loc. Had a lynksys "G" series router which worked fine but Comcast offered me a Netgear N150 router for free so I made the switch. Now my laptop can find the router but not get to the internet and my desktop (which is connected Wirelessly) stutters with movie streaming. The Netgear N150 says I can get up to 150 mbps but I am only getting on average 11 mbps which makes streaming pretty jerky.

Just so you know if you call Comcast they will only help you with hard line connections from your router to your computers. They view that as part of the customer service you are paying for. However, wireless connections are not considered part of the costumer service included in your subscription. To get help with wireless connections you need to have a further subscription with XFinity.

The above is what I was just told by Comcast Customer service not two minutes ago. What's even funnier? I work for Comcast and they are telling me this, lol.

Where are you getting this info?

Any tips for getting better service? Wait a sec...

**I would second the use the Linksys router for your wireless connection. You have a lot more control over that device.

I've got a three year old '54GS that works like a charm. Whole-house coverage with zero problems. Still strongly recommended.
