I own a legal copy of MS Office 2007 but HATE MS and really really want to use Libre Office. Should I hold my nose and use MS Office or should I go with Libre Office? if I do go with Libre Office will I be missing anything?
Thank You

Depends on what you do...

I guess the best advice I can give is install it, and try it...what's it going to harm?

Okay, I'll ask in a simpler way.

Which open-source office productivity suite is better: OpenOffice, or LibreOffice?

One's an evolution of the other...

Maybe this will explain the two and illustrate how strange that question really is...

I am very happy Ovenmaster got his answer, but my question still remains.

Does anybody have any experience using both MS office 2007 and Libre office is one better then the other?
Does MS Office 2007 have more features then Libre office?

I will be using the suit for presentations and marketing materials

Thank You!!!

The alternative office suites exist as mirrors to MS Office. As such, they rarely offer innovations. And they may lag behind the stuff MS introduce. Your hatred should already sway you to the open-sourced alternative. If you're still on the fence, produce a presentation or marketing project using one or both, saving it in both native formats as you progress. The answer will become clear to you soon enough.

Just remember you can open Word docs in Open Office and Libre Office but not change them. You cannot open Open Office in word.

If you are working in the corporate world, use Word. If you are making presentations and word type docs for clubs ectra, use the alternative.

I use Open Office for Club documents and the occasional letter.

Do you work in the Corporate world or not? Because I think you do not know what you are talking about.

You can edit the old MS Office (.doc, .xls) in LibreOffice and save those files. I agree with you though, if you are working in the corporate world or are a student, Microsoft Office is definitely a better choice. If you just need a word processor for personal use, most people should be fine with LibreOffice.

Here is a bit of insight.

Yesterday when I visited my insurance agent and my public library (I know the circulation manager), I asked and found that they both use OpenOffice. When I asked why, they said that licensing costs were an issue, and that OpenOffice was sufficiently compatible with archived Microsoft documents to cause no problems. The insurance agent liked the built-in free PDF export function in Writer. The library liked the frequency of updates to the OpenOffice suite. When I asked if they were looking into LibreOffice, the insurance agent was not aware of it, and the library told me that would be a decision made by their IT staff.

First I want to thank all that have responded to this. Also I would like to clarify somethings.

I am using the office suite for mix use and what I wanted to know is, if I wanted to create a complex and professional looking documents such as presentations or a text document that have more then just text in it, or create marketing material such as fliers etc.

Do I have to install MS for that or the difference between the two is not that significant that Libre will suffice (which I hope it will)

So why haven't you installed it and tried things out?

It's not like it's going to affect your MS Office installation and it's not like it's going to cost you anything...other then maybe media to burn an ISO to.

We had a discussion over in Alt OS a while back why Linux apps )where specifically things like office apps (openoffice), video (specifically mythtv compared to what's in windows), and entertainment (graming) weren't as popular as windows apps and the bottom line came down to...people use either an MS app because they're more productive with them and it's something they know, although there were plenty of people who spoke up that they use one app with great success, while someone else did not have that experience.

Although it was never directly said, that basically translated to, I spent the time to learn it and it works well for what I do.

There will be some slight difference there, so I would highly recommend creating something in open office or libre office and then display it or open it with an MS app. If there's things you can deal with, then use it...if there isn't, then shelve it.
