I've recently been working on an HP Pavilion dv5-1250us Notebook (Vista). When I was "working" (aka, gaming) the computer's power strip was turned off. When I attempted to reboot the computer, it froze at a variety of different stages (before and after the login screen comes up, and after attempting to open an application).

During boot-up, there's a "press 'esc'" to enter boot-up menu, so I did so and ran some built-in diagnostic tests. The memory test came up clean, but the HDD test gave me three errors, 301, 303, and 305 (scroll down on this page for HP's take on the errors).

These posts on the HP website cause me to believe that I need to replace the HDD? What do you guys think?

Uhhhhh, yes. Failed the SMART, Quick and Full tests. [Did you reseat and retest?]

Hard Disk Test Hard Disk 1 SMART 301 You can attempt to reseat the hard drive and repeat the test.
The hard disk drive may have failed. Contact HP Support for further assistance.

Hard Disk Test Hard Disk 1 Quick 303 The hard disk drive may have failed. Contact HP Support for further assistance.

Hard Disk Test Hard Disk 1 Full 305 The hard disk drive may have failed. Contact HP Support for further assistance.

Time for a new SATA(?) 2.5" HDD or SSD.

Yeah, I reseated and retested, to no avail.

I didn't mention this in the OP, but I this was a friend's computer (that I was using at the time) and he decided to take it in to Fry's (where he bought it) so it's out of my hands now (unfortunately, I probably would've saved him a good $50).

Thanks!

Did he see you gaming on it?
Why didn't he let you fix it? was it under warranty?

Oh, yeah. We were gaming right next to each other (and with each other) the entire time....

It is under warranty, I think, but as the computer is technically his parent's, they didn't want to take the chance....oh well... they're loss.
