so after a time of just building pc's for fun i decide to try my hand at overclocking my older setup just before my new one arrives. i read a few guides look through the forums here and then decide to delve on into it. i have changed one thing in my bios and now i fear i have bricked it. i cant get it to go past a black screen so i can change it back. it dosent BSOD it just wont load anything and i havent a clue why.

any ideas?

A few questions for you...

1. What setting did you change?
2. What motherboard do you have?
3. Have you tried resetting the CMOS?
4. If you have tried resetting the CMOS, have you tried taking out the motherboard battery for a few seconds and then putting it back in?

Hi,

Resetting the BIOS should get you going. Just pulling the battery out may not reset the BIOS. The circuit is designed to allow you to change the battery without losing setup. Some take longer than others. A couple of hours may be necessary. Some designers make it long enough for you to take the battery to the store to get a new one. Best way is always the jumper if you can find it. Removing the jumper from pins 1 and 2 removes the battery from the circuit. Placing it on pins 3 and 4 shorts across the circuit to discharge the capacitors immediately. Back to pins 1 and 2 and you should be on your way. Of course you should remove all AC power either from the switch on the back of the PSU or pull the power cord out of the socket for either method to work. You will know if the reset was successful if the Clock and Date go several years slow.

Hope this helps someone.

Luck, Jim

Edit: Never saw a MB with the button to reset BIOS Setup. Much easier to use than a jumper. Does the same thing as the jumper. Opens battery connection and shorts the caps when pressed. I should also add that some MBs have a feature in the BIOS Setup to do the job for you. Phoenix/Award calls it "Reset Configuration Data". You set it to "Enable", reboot and the job is done and the feature is reset to "Disable". Easier than other methods if you can get into BIOS Setup.

Jim

ok so as it turns out the 750I ftw mobo dosent have jumpers on it as described. what it does have in the bottom center of the mobo is a small tiny red button that you dont think is a button. i only found it after about 5 minutes of staring at the board looking for theese jumpers. i pulled out the power cord from the psu and held said red button down for a good 10-15 seconds plugged it all back in and now she started up just find and dandy.

Awesome, glad you were able to figure it out.

In the future, you could always look in the motherboard manual since they normally tell you how to reset the CMOS.
