dear all,

I got two HDD on my rig, seagate 80GB on master & hitachi 80GB as slave. unfortnately, when I tried to install fresh WinXP, it took more than 15 minutes to examine the disk until a message: <setup cannot access this disk> shows up for hitachi.

but, the hitachi appears on BIOS with full size of 76123 MB, still.

guys, any assistance would be great.

You may have the Master Slave jumpers set wrong on those hard drives. The drive at the very end of the cable should be jumpered as master and the drive below it should be set as slave. Are the drives set as such?

Nasty

It could also be that there are some serious errors on the drive, and windows could not successfully access the drive in order to install. If the jumpers are correct, try running the diagnostic software from the manufacturer on the drive and see if it shows anything.

Try the other HDD and see if it does the same thing.

the jumpers.. both are already set properly. actually I've successfully installed the OS on seagate (master) but the hitachi still won't be touched neihter in XP setup nor in windows explorer. the disk even won't present in win explorer.

device diagnostic tool? it sounds hope-giving. will get and try it.

Does the BIOS see the drive? If it does, it just might need to be formatted, you can open Disk Management and partition and format the drive from with in windows.

Perplexity dismisses

I went to bootdisk.com to download Win98SE and tried to recognize the Hitachi with the ancient Windows. It worked. Now the disk becomes familiar again also with the XP setup.

I think it was a partition failure issue when I tried to delete partitions on the drive.

Thanks to bootdisk.com for providing the older version of Windows over the net. And I'm grateful for you too, guys.
