Friend gave me his laptop hdd to try and recover files from it. It stopped booting up with clicks and what sounds like high-pitched beeping sounds. On boot up it will make these noises then stop. At this point the bios more times then not will see the drive but on boot up into windows the drive is not seen, not with Disk Management or Device Manager.

Would replacing the system(logic,circuit) board on it help and if so how close a match does it need to be?

If it's clicking, the hard drive is dead.

As for the second portion. It would have to be from the same run of drives. Ie your chances of replacing a logic board yourself is highly unlikely. Hence why people charge thousands to go recover data off drives like this one.

Just to clarify: what we mean by dead is the drive's logic board isn't dead. The hard drive head can't pick up data. So even if you replaced the logic board, you'd still have a problem.

Yes the clicking you hear is usually one of two things. The head bouncing off the platters (really really bad!) or the head mechanism having play. Thus not allowing it to center over the track correctly.

Put the drive in the fridge overnight and then when its nice and chilly pop it into a reader on anothet computer. This trick has works numerous times for me.

I was talking more about finding a drive from the same run. But clearly you have proven me wrong with those links. Well played banana peel
