Maximum PC

Well it's been a week and a half since I upgraded to Windows 8 and for the most part I am quite pleased. However there are a couple of quirks that, though not earthshaking, are annoying.

Quirk 1 - I am running it on a system with three monitors. Two of them are hooked up to my discrete graphics card (VGA and HDMI) and the third is hooked up to the onboard Intel graphics (DVI). I have the HDMI set as the main display. Occasionally the desktop icons will switch to a different display than the one on which I placed them. So I have to drag them back to the original display. This same setup worked without issue on Windows 7.

Quirk 2 - When I am in the Win 8 Start screen and I click on a Win 8 app to run it, it will act as though it is starting then take me back to the Start screen. I then have to click on the icon a second time and it will run.

Any suggestions? Has anybody else seen these behaviors?

This is a new system and it will have teething problems, for the time being keep the system fully updated and give Microsoft some feedback on their forum. I am sure the feedback you give there is being monitored and will be addressed in the future.

You know when I posted my message I knew that somebody would make negative comments about using WIndows 8. But ya know, if these two minor quirks are all that I have to beef about than I am happy. I have no problem whatsoever using it on my desktop.

My advice to the Windows 8 naysayers - Take the time to really try the OS and learn to navigate it before you pass judgment. Because from what I have seen in the comments on the magazine, few of you truly have done so.

Ew, Windows 7? Why not Linux? Or how about a real UNIX operating system like Mac OS X?

After playing with computers since the 80's, even I know to never buy an OS until its first Service Pack edition comes out.

True Ovenmaster. I too have many years of experience (40+) and I am typically conservative in the same manner. But I had used the Consumer Preview version on another system and the upgrade price was very reasonable as opposed to waiting until the product had been out for a while. Not to mention the limited time free upgrade with Media Center. Besides, these are minor issues, not system crashing/earth shaking/data corruption problems. I've had more serious problems with Windows 7 even after three years of use, so waiting is no guarantee of stability.

Anyhow, it's all moot since I got my answers. The display problem is related to the different sized displays. And the app starting problem was resolved when I went back and reinstalled Windows 8 as a clean install on an empty SSD. It is purring along just fine now without any issues.

All of that said, I should know better than to expect any REAL help on these forums. In 5+ years as a member I have yet to see any resolution to any problem I have ever had with any OS. Usually just smart a-- answers and "You should know better".

Well...if you really feel that way about this forum, why do you keep coming back? Because right now you are just being a troll with your last comments and we don't need that here.

Fair question Nasty. And you are right in that I was out of line. Let's just chalk it up to a really bad morning with a lot of issues unrelated to computer or OS problems. My apologies to all concerned.
