depends on what you define as "cheap".

a cheap 2.26ghz P4 oc's really well with a decent mobo and regular pc-3200 ram...

if you have the money to buy enthusiast ram, and a nice oc'in mobo, then go for a 2.4ghz P4C.

2.4GHz P4 in an Abit IC7 mobo with a decent heatsink with 400MHz and above RAM and you could hit 3.4GHz. check some pricing at newegg.com and read some reviews on the IC7. The IC7/2.4 mobo/proc combo is popular. People hit 3GHz all the time.

everything mentioned is northwood, the better the memory, the better the oc.

cheaper quality ram will quit before the cpu has reached its limits, good will allow you to stay in a 1 to 1 ratio between cpu and ram. this is good :)

550/560's can have their multipliers unlocked so you can lower them. Not a lot of board makers outside of Asus have offered it, but it's sure to come very soon. Abit has a new BIOS for the AA8 just released, but mine's ripped back apart so i can't see what this new "proc feature" is they're refering to...poor thing barely gets a chance to run!

Without going to the 925x and sticking with s478, I think 2.4-2.8's all faired really well.
