Hello!

Here's the situation. I currently have an AMD build (AMD Phenom II X61090T) with two two 6950s on a gigabyte mother board with 4 4MB sticks of RAM (Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600). I plan to give this computer to my daughter who is starting junior high and likes to game with me on occasion while I build a new PC for myself (I also want her to use if for school work :D ).

I mainly will be using this build as a gaming machine. I want to run a duel monitor desktop (I have the monitors already) and also a 42" panel (I have a 42" Panasonic IPS 1080P). I play WoW, Elder Scrolls, and plan to play other MMOs and also start using my steam account to play games like Batman, Dishonored, Half Life, Crysis, BioShock, etc.

So far the parts I have are the following:

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout Silent ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

SSD: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Power Supply: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Parts I need:

CPU: I am leaning towards i5 or i7 Haswell (Mostly using for gaming so I presume that I don't need more that the i5 chip that does not have HD Video processing as I'll be using a video card)

Memory: Does this depend on the motherboard? Also, would it be feasible to split the 16MB of RAM in my old system into old system and new build?

Mother Board: Completely open (prior experience with Asus and Gigabyte but open to any recommended brands)

Graphics Card: I would like to upgrade but if I split my two 6950s between my new build and old would I be able to max out 1080p settings for the above type of games? However if I decide to get higher resolution monitors a few months down the road would that change the graphics card recommendation?

DVD and/or BluRay: Am I good with a $20-25 DVD Burner or worth it to step up to a BluRay (note I do not burn anything other than maybe the occasional CD-R).

Case fans: quiet and quality

CPU Cooler: mid range liquid CPU cooler that would work for my Fractal Design case ($50-$75)?

I can spend up around $1000 or a little more if the upgrade is a good price/performance boost. I also already have a copy of Windows7 64-bit.

Let me know if I missed anything. Thanks in advance for the help!!

CPU: i5-4690K at the best, i7's aren't worth it for gaming machines.
Motherboard: If you are getting a i5-4690K, you should get a Z97 board for out-of-the-box compatibility.
RAM: 4GBx2 of DDR3-1600
GPU: I'd probably get a GTX 770, newer games are starting to give my GTX 670 a sweat at 2560x1440. 1080p is okay though. Mostly.
DVD/BD: If you need an optical drive, DVD is still the way to go. It's not worth getting Blu-Ray unless you plan on watching Blu-Ray movies.
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212 if you're not going to overclock much, or something like a Corsair H80i if you are. Though if you get the CM 212, you can't use a side fan for the case because there won't be any clearance.

Thanks for the input.

So my plan so far is to go with the i5-4690K, and scalp the RAM from my old system. Haven't had a chance to look into the CPU coolers yet.

But what about the motherboard? I will definitely be going with a Z97 board, but there are so many. Are there a few that come highly recommended?

Would something like GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard work well? This is one of the first few that caught my eye on newegg.

Something like that would work. I like the clean look too.

How about the video card?

Maximum says the R9 280 out performs the 760. How does the 280 compare to the Nvidia 770? Would a 280x or 290 be a big step up if a good deal can be found?

The 770 performs better than the 280 and about the same as the 280X. The 290 would be better than the 770.
