So we had a bad storm come through a few days ago and apparently a surge hit my monitor (even with a backup battery / surge) in place.

It is quite random now when it will and will not power on.

This is the monitor I have had for roughly 6 years.

I mostly do a lot of Photoshop work so color gamut is priority, but i do play an occasional game here and there.

This is what I am looking at to replace the HP,

But my main question is, is it worth to wait and just get by with something cheap - and later get a 4k panel or is that a bit overkill and will the 4k panels have the quality that this monitor does?

thanks,
Mani

Going 4K depends on a few things.
  • Can you really use that resolution?
  • Do you have a DisplayPort 1.2 output? (this is important)

The second bit is really important, because most 4K monitors are actually two panels and they rely on DisplayPort's multistreaming protocol to do 60Hz refresh. As for quality, I know Dell has a 4K monitor that is 99% Adobe RGB and 100% sRGB and they're usually good now about calibrating it for out-of-box use. It's also $3000.

So it's really up to you. :B

But if you routinely work on pictures over 8MP, it might be nice to see the entire picture at 100% zoom.
