So, new install of Windows 8.1 on new EVO 840 500Gb SSD. Forgot to activate AHCI in bios of Asus P7P55D-E before install. Went back into bios, turned it on, but when booting the bios still does not seem to see that drive in AHCI mode. The SSD is the only drive on the machine at the moment. Tried the Windows registry changes to activate AHCI, but they did not work. Samsung Magician utility says that AHCI mode is deactivated AND it is unable to detect any SATA interface (but it runs, so what is up there?). Any suggestions? It still is very fast, but apparently can be faster. I think this board was one of the earlier ones to support Sata III. The onboard controller is Marvell, I think. I e-mailed ASUS but no reply.

Did you try to change the settings? Or is it stuck with what you set it to?

I figured it out. The board has a Marvell controller setting that is hard to find in the bios menu. When I did find it, I could activate it and then, after a reboot, the Samsung Magic utility recognized that the controller was correctly set. The I/O speeds (read and write) went from 6692 to 28594 iops for the random speeds. It did not change the sequential i/o speeds much. Thanks for looking at my question.
