Got a free Dell Vostro 200 with an Intel E4500 w/XP Pro from work. Got some free RAM from work too and now the system has 8gigs of RAM. Planning on putting a Crucial M500 SSD with Windows 7 64-bit, and an ASUS GT-610 graphics card. The only problem I can see right now is that my BIOS only has IDE and RAID for the SATA contoller, no AHCI. From searching the web I should be putting the BIOS in RAID mode if adding the SSD to achieve AHCI. If so, then how will I run TRIM if from what I read TRIM will not run in RAID? If I manually run Ccleaner's drive wipe, would that be a good alternative, and if that is a good alternative, should I just leave the BIOS in IDE? Thanks.

Did you try a BIOS update?

Worse comes to worse though... I don't see a pressing need for the system to have an SSD. Heck, I might even suggest throwing up XBMC instead of Windows 7.

While I would use something different, I use a Silicone Dust Prime HD for television and need WMC. I opted for an SSD for boot speed and WMC performance. I won't be doing any downloading or a lot of work done on this pc. Most of it if not all is for entertainment and all of that is locally stored on my network and will not be on the PC. Besides any recording will be done on a secondary standard HD. And I checked the latest BIOS update and it still does not have AHCI. So maybe TRIM won't be that important if used as a "TV, Netflix, iTunes, Vudu box"?

If you're doing write few-read many then sure, it won't be that important.

Location: Sittin' downtown at the railway station, one toke over the line.
The drive should have its own 'garbage collection' utility that will run independently. Do NOT defrag or use any 'driver wipe' utility, that will just cause a lot of unnecessary writes.
