I've finally decided to take the plunge and do a complete rebuild of my desktop (currently running a very old, dual-chip x5365/3.0ghz xenon setup)
trying to figure out which processor to by. I'm throwing $5k at the project.

The point of the project is more for the build than for satisfying any pressing need for an upgrade -- I'm sure I can get away with far less, use an i5, etc...

Anyway, which processor is the fastest? I'm a little confused over IBE vs. haswell.
the "best of" on maximum pc lists the 4960x as the best current proessor -- this is ibe, correct?
Is there a haswell processr that is faster? what about the i7=4770k?

This is what I'm getting, btw, so any comments welcome (I based this on the current "ultra" build):
case: corsair 900d

PSU: thermaltake 1220m

Mobo: Asus Rampage Extreme Iv (is this worth the extra $$, or just go with a x79 delux? Am I going to regret taking the plunge now when the ne chipsets come out in a few months?)

Chip: Intel i7-4960x or i7-4770k

cooling: corsair hydro h110i

GPU: 2x evga GTX 780/NZXT G10

Well...

What are you planning to do with this and is this more to buy the absolute best parts or to get the most out of your money?

build the best I can for $4k. Like I said, the fun is more in the build than in what I'm actually going to use it for.

Just building one computer and spending all that money sounds like a waste. I'd just partition it for multiple builds. More builds to satisfy that building bug. But that's just me.

If you want the best of the best at the moment:
CPU: Core i7-4960X
GPU: GeForce GTX Titan Black
Cooling: Custom built water cooling. Otherwise H00i
Motherboard: There really isn't much of a best here.

And throw in a 1TB SSD in there or two.
