Am running a system I built about 7 years ago - was fine for my needs but it is getting old and since I'm still running XP-pro I decided I better start upgrading. Will be building a whole new rig from the ground up but thought I would get a new hard drive first, install it in my current rig, install windows 7 and install all my software at a leisurely pace - then build my new rig and bring the new drive over. My current cpu is an AMD FX-55 - great for its time by way outdated. I was considering getting a SSD sized at about 250g. Not sure what will work with my old cpu relative to firmare, SATA speed, etc. Any suggestions would be helpful - thanks - Marty

Ah, an old San Diego chip on a socket 939.

Well... the problem is that the SATA ports are capped to gen 1 speeds, or 150MB/s. While this is faster that a majority of HDDs, it's still pretty damn slow. Especially when you consider most SSDs today reach 550MB/s. But that aside, you'll still get the snappiness one provides. So if you're doing basic stuff on it, an SSD might help.
