Hi all.
Thanks for all the past help !! This the best place to get some advice.
Need some motherboard finding help.
Need a 478 socket MB, I have a northwood 3.06 cpu/heatsink
Needs to be a micro ATX, the kind with only 3 PCI slots, 1 APG
Integrated graphics/sound (just need to see a desktop, no gaming)
4 mem slots (can live with 2, but I have 4 sticks ready to go)
But here is the kicker:
Needs to be able to handle 2 FFD's.
I got a 5.25 360k 1/2 height, and 3.5 1.44 FDD's I need to use.
Sata would be nice. So I think it has to be a 865 chipset?? But I do have an IDE drive around.
And I do not want to break the bank getting one. Obviously I'm looking to used boards.
But the ones I see I think are proprietary boards from emachine, HP, gateway, Aser, etc . They look right but I'm not sure if they have standard psu connection or will only load their companies copy of XP
The Intel MB's i see only handle 1 FDD
I know it is kind of strange request, But I want to do some retro computing and need to bridge the gap between old and and less old, and this build would do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again !!

a single ide connector will connect multiple devices, its the cable not the connector that determines how many devices can be connected. somewhere today I saw a HP desktop with a p4 for 99 dollars. perhaps ebay could have what you want. psu connector is 20 pin, some manufacturers still make a psu with a 20+4 power connector and there are still some available with a 20.

If the only reason you're looking for a socket 478 board is because you need an FDD controller, then get one of these: http://www.kryoflux.com/ . And a review of it here http://blip.tv/lazygamereviews/kryoflux ... ew-5885894 . I think you can find boards or expansion cards or other hacks like this that take IDE drives.

I do have to ask, is this for a retro gaming rig? Because a Pentium 4 based machine is way too new for that sort of thing. You need to start looking into the original Pentium or 486's. In particular, the 486 DX2 is probably the best jack-of-all-trades for retro gaming.

Hi, g.m.waters
thanks for the reply,
The BIOS also determines how many floppies can be connected. The BIOS (according to the manual, for the socket 478 IBM's i saw only support 1 FDD. The Dell 4600i I have now only supports 1, 3.5 1.44 FDD.
I have all the parts I need except a MB that supports 2 FDD

Hi, LatiosXT
I saw that a few days ago, but I need to write to the floppies too. It is not for retro gaming. I have a 5150, an XT, and couple others from that time that I want to get up and running. I need to write DOS files, programs, etc to floppy from downloads.

Okay, why not a compromise? Why does it have to be 2 FDDs? Sure it'd be a pain in the ass, but if you just need an FFD, just swap back and forth as necessary. Or stick the 5.25" in the motherboard and get a USB floppy drive for the 3.5" disks.

Pretty much most computers after 2000 started to stop caring about floppies, so I doubt you'll find something with two ports.

I do not need 2 ports, Just a BIOS that will recognize 2 FDD's on a mATX with 478 socket on the single board header, like all used to do way back then.
My Dell 4600 BIOS only sees 3.5 even when the 5.25 is connected
Will a emachine, HP, gateway, etc MB let a retail XP os install? And has 'standard' power connections. If there are any like that then I have lot to choose from. I'd rather go with a regular MB (MSI, Abit, Gigabyte, etc) But any will do.
Thanks

Ah. Well in that case you need to make sure the floppy drive has master/slave jumpers and that they are set correctly. There's also even the fact if Windows XP even knows 5.25" drives exist.

I'm sure they do. Thanks for your comments
But what I'm asking is recommendations for particular motherboards fitting my limited criteria
Any model suggestions?

I mean, you don't need two FDD connectors. If you're daisy chaining them, you have to make sure their master/slave jumpers are set.

That link helps a lot. I did not know ebay has options to search like that.
I decided on a Biostar I found that has a most everything I want.
thanks

PS FDD's have never been master/slave like IDE. for lack of better term, they are cable select. fri
