I'm looking for a network external hard drive. I like the WD storage solutions. But I don't want to just be a backup, I want to move files there so I can access them from another machine. I could set up share drives.
I am not sure what I exactly need. Am I looking at a NAS?

A NAS or a DIY basic computer that you want as the file server.

That is what I was thinking. Pretty much, extended external hard drives. The back externals are pretty much for backup right? You can't move files there and then pull them to another machine.

If you're using backup software, it might be the case, but external hard drives and NAS drives tend to act like any other hard drive you have in the system.

i should probably build my own, i was thinking of a Small Form Factor box. with (4) TB drives and RAID 5, maybe using RAID 5 or Win 7 or FreeNAS.
what do you think. its just going to house files. all apps will be on hosted computer.

The WD "My Cloud" external drive works like a charm, has a usb3 port for adding a second drive, possible more with a usb hub. I haven't tried that yet.

I picked up a 3tb cloud on sale for $130, I plugged in a 2tb usb3 external Seagate drive I had for a total of 5TB personal cloud storage. The WD software installs easily and it works. I have access to my cloud with all my connected devises. I'm very pleased with the transfer speeds and setup is a breeze.
