Ok so new to this forum. Have been searching the web the past couple of weeks trying to find an answer to my dilemma. Ok so here it is, I'm planning on building a gaming rig in the near future and want it to be of good quality. I was just given a Intel core 2 extreme qx 6850 chip and what I want to know should/could I build a high performing machine with this chip or is it too dated? Everything I've found on it is old comparisons. But I did see the chip is still listed on amazon for nearly a grand. Any help, comments, or suggestions will be appreciated.

Update after reading more information I'm pretty sure with it only having 2 cores that it will bottleneck any modern GPU correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah...That's an old chip, maybe 3 generations ago(?). It was released 7 years ago. It is a quad-core processor using the LGA775 socket. I can't be too sure of it's performance for gaming but I would guess most current chips will be much better. Also, it will probably be hard finding a motherboard for it. Finally, the upgrade path will be highly limited. Probably not a good idea to build around this chip.

Well, not as a primary gaming rig. You could always get a $200 video card if you want a budget gaming rig or a cheap one and use it as a dev box or something.

Thanks that's what I was leaning towards just wanted to see if I could get some use out of it. Will probably use it to upgrade my parents dinosaur of a machine. Now to decide which route I want to go, one of the amd fx series chips or one of the i5s decisions decisions lol.
