Hey guys
I've been tinkering with the old MaxPC HTPC build (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/featur ... c?page=0,0) and I'm having a bit of trouble getting my soundcard to run into my A/V reciever and out to the speakers. The speakers work, having been tested on my xbox but plugging the hdmi cable into the card and reciever doesn't produce sound. Can someone help me figure out how to correct this?

Check Control Panel -> Sound to make sure the HDMI out on your sound card is the default output. If it isn't, right click and check "Set as default device"

Setting it to anything to do with the soundcard itself causes it not to work
Would I perhaps need a "y cable" plugged into the HDMI input on the AV that accepts the outputs from both the graphics card and the soundcard?

So after digging around some more (and it doesn't help I can't access Azuntech's website for some reason)...

I'm going to conclude the HDMI out on the soundcard is actually a misnomer. It won't output anything unless you have an input source (it will take what you feed it, mix it, then spit it back out, like how a receiver with HDMI passthroughs work). The sound card did come with a DVI<->HDMI adapter that's really short though so this makes me think...

So what I think what should be happening is:

  • Set the audio out default to the video card, assuming it supports bitstreaming over DVI
  • Plug in everything like this: Video card DVI out -> Sound card HDMI in; Sound card HDMI out -> Receiver HDMI in; Receiver HDMI out -> TV

Sounds like it could work. My HTPC is currently disassmebled for an SSD installation so I'll give that a shot soon as I can!

And running this way through the sound card would ensure the video is received as well?

Yes, assuming that it's a passthrough like how audio receivers work.

OK, few things I've learned as a result of my testing.
1.) I don't seem to have the option to set my video card as the output, unless by that you mean to select the AV reciever (on screen it is listed as VSX-1020-0/NVIDIA High Definition Audio/Ready)
2.) Selecting the reciever works fine when running from video card to reciever (DVI-HDMI or solely HDMI) in terms of 5.1 audio, but does not work when running my system to way you described (video does work, and selecting one of the Auzentech options available gives sound, but only in stereo.

Thoughts?

Yes, that one.

Well let's make sure the sound card works as intended. Run an HDMI source into it and run the output to the TV.

OK, running the cables as Videocard-DVI/HDMI-Soundcard-HDMI-TV, sound comes through (albeit delayed slightly when doing the control panel's test tones, but playing a YouTube video is no issue)

The default audio device in this instance is Digital Audio (HDMI)/Auzentech X-Fi Home Theater HD/Default Device.

Another testing update - running HDMI between the Video card and sound card does work, but still does not transfer the 5.1 sound to the reciever

I'm a little flaky on this since I don't use HDMI for audio... but make sure in Sound Properties it's configured to send out 5.1. I think by default it only spits out stereo and you have to manually enable the others.

Actually got it to work, turns out there's a bunch of settings on the Auzentech control panel that needed messing with
Thank you for all your help!

Well I guess I spoke too soon...Not working. The previous setting played everything through the front two channels (stereo)

Are you using the exact build in that article? Down to the receiver and everything?

Well let's go over configurations...

  • You made sure that both the Azuntech settings and Windows settings are set up to allow 5.1 output?
  • The sound test you're using is actually outputting 5.1?
  • Your receiver is configured properly for 5.1?
  • Is the sound test is using an encoding method (Dolby, DTS, etc) that your receiver cannot use?

Alright, I have good news/annoying news
I got 5.1 PCM to work. Google searched for the manual for the card and did some settings in the Auzentech Contol Panel.
The annoying news is that I seem to need to repeat the steps described in the manuel each time the computer reboots. An annoyance and if a work around can be found that would be awesome.
