I've had a computer sitting in my closet for a few years, unfortunately I haven't been a very good owner. It's based on an X6800 cpu, and still has an nVidia 8800 GTS card. The hard drives are laughable by today's standards. Full specs are:

Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 Case (Silver)
eVga 680i SLI motherboardIntel X6800 Core 2 Extreme Boxed Processor
Zalman 9700 LED CPU Cooler
eVga 8800 GTS 640MB video card
2 x 1Gigabyte Crucial Ballistix 6400 RAM memory sticks
Creative X-FI Platnium w/ Drive Bay box
Plextor 18x Lightscribe DVD Combo drive
OCZ 700W GameXtreme power supply

Would there be any benefit to upgrading RAM, GPU and storage on this? Or just toss it off to some nephew or other?

Add another 2GB or 4GB of RAM and upgrade the video card to a GTX 660 or similar and I see this being a pretty good gaming rig. If we were to believe Tom's Hardware, they put it in the same league as the Phenom II X6 1055T and FX-6100, which are also common choices for budget but capable gaming rigs.
