a recent build I did a few weeks ago for a friend got me thinking about how to orient the heatsink for the CPU. Since heat rises, would it make a difference if I had the heatsink so the fan was facing down (since most fans on heatsinks push air through the heatsink)? Or should i just have it facing forward so it's pulling air from the front? Or does it matter if the case has a top fan or a rear facing fan?

It should be pointing with airflow. If this is a normal ATX case, then the fan should be forward of the heat sink, pushing air into it.

Although in reality, it doesn't really matter. It's an active cooling element. Whatever "help" it's going to get elsewhere is minimal at best.

In general, airflow should move from front to back, and bottom to top. In line with your thinking, this would complement normal airflow of air being heated.

Hope this helps.

It all depends on what kind of HS you're talking about. I am guessing OP is talking about the big heat sinks with the heat pipes (like CM Hyper 212). These usually have the fins layered parallel to the mobo. In these case, you would push the across the fins and then out the case exhaust.

<< x-----x << AIR
<< x-----x <<

------CPU------

If you are talking of the old style or OEM heat sinks, the fan is blowing air down towards the mobo. These have fins that are layered perpendicular to the mobo.

Some low profile HTPC heat pipe heatsinks, like Noctua NH-L12 will have smaller fins with a fan below the fins and blowing air vertically.

I have seen people mount it so the fan blows towards the rear exhaust fan, the top exhaust fan or the top mounted PSU intake (fan). I have also seen people mount it to blow over the RAM sticks.

Getting the heat out of the case ASAP seems the best solution to me.
