Just making a wish list for building a new gaming computer. My previous build is now 3 years old, time to start thinking upgrade. Any comments on the parts? Do these work well together?

I'm seeing nothing. Did you make your wishlist public?

This system is way too overkill for a gaming computer.

1. Get a Core i5-4670K or something like that
2. Find a $120-$150 Z87 board
3. Get 8GB of RAM.

You definitely don't need 64 gigs of ram. If you just want gaming, 16 is plenty. Get two 8 gig sticks with the ability to buy another 16 gigs several years down the line. 16 is probably more than you would need, but ram is cheap and to a certain extent you can't have too much of it. But 64 is too much in 2013. That's silly.

You can probably get away with a Haswell cpu and motherboard instead of ivy bridge E, so you can save a bunch of money there.

If you can afford the 780, go for it- I wouldn't buy it but that's a money issue. For gaming, GPU is going to be your most important component. If you have extra cash (after you get rid of the extra ram and CPU power), you can always throw the money here to get a longer lasting card.

RAM isn't exactly cheap anymore, last I checked the stuff skyrocketed to $80 for 8GB because of that fire in Hynix's plant.

But I still stand that 8GB is enough. Until we get 64-bit games that actually break the 4GB barrier constantly, then there's no point going beyond 8GB (and 32-bit programs under 64-bit Windows 99.9999% of the time will be capped to 2GB).

Excellent, thanks for the replies. I just love the word "overkill". Great band and it means I'm doing something right!

No idea if I will buy any upgrades, I have to get the WAF... I have a new desk and my HAF 932 is in a cubby. I may want to look into liquid cooling.

What is a good RAM frequency to go with? (2400) (1833) (1600)

1600. So far there's really no point in going faster unless you're using integrated graphics.
