Hey,
I'm trying to build an approx 1100$ (flexible) desktop PC , which I'll use mostly for work (compsci), but sometimes for gaming (stuff like MW and Skyrim, but doesn't have to be bleeding edge). Anyway, I've looked at the recommended PC builds of the last three months and I've boiled them down to the parts that I can get (I don't live in the US) and that seem to have good value-for-money.

Anyway, here's what I have so far (links for reference only):
CPU - Intel Core i7-4770, 3.4GHz (I'm pretty sure about this one, according to PassMark it's a beast)
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 - since I'm not going to OC, is it really much worse than the Z87 models?
RAM - I can get a generic 8GB stick from Transcend (DDR3/1600MHz/CL9) or I can get two 4GB sticks from Corsair (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) with the same specs. Which is better?
HDD - Western Digital WD10EZEX (1TB/7200RPM/SATA 6GB/s)
PSU - I can get either a Corsair VS450 (450W) or a VS550 (550W), but currently I don't know why I'd need the extra 100W (do I?)
Case - I'm leaning towards the Corsair Carbide 200R, since I can't get the NZXT 210 Source Elite.
Optical Drive - Samsung SH224BB
GPU - No clue! What do you think?
SSD (?) - Should I get one?

So does this build seem at all reasonable or am I way off?
Thanks in advance!

And my 2 cents

  • Does the stuff you do make use of multiple threads? If not, I'd bump the processor down to a i5-4670
  • The B85 isn't really that much worse, you just get less SATA6 and USB 3.0 ports.
  • Go with Corsair. Reputable brands are much better than generic ones.
  • GPU, go with a $200 card. I believe this is a GeForce 660 or a Radeon HD 7870
  • Get a small (120GB) SSD to hold your OS and programs so you can at least reap the benefits of speed and responsiveness. :D

Thanks for your response :D
Frankly, since I'm going to do a lot of compilation of some pretty heavy frameworks, I'd rather keep the CPU (also I might be able to get it at a discount). By the way, I really like the specs of the HD7870, but for some reason it's really expensive where I live (~285$).
As for the SSD, I think I'll go for two partitions, one for Windows (NTFS) and one for Ubuntu (EXT4). Is 64GB enough, or should I go the extra mile? (I can get the SDSSDP064G for a decent price).

EDIT: Also - do you think the 450W PSU will be enough?

Windows eats up 20GB after an install, 64GB would be the minimum I'd recommend if throwing it on an SSD.

As for a PSU, I'd go with a 500W-550W unit.

Just wanted to update that I've ordered the parts. The final build I went for is:
    CPU - i5-4670
    MOBO - GA-B85-HD3
    RAM - Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 (2x4GB)
    HDD - Western Digital WD10EZEX (1TB/7200RPM/SATA 6GB/s)
    PSU - Corsair VS550
    Case - Corsair Carbide 200R
    Optical Drive - Samsung SH224BB
GPU - ATI Radeon HD 7850
SSD - SanDisk SDSSDP128G (ultra edition)
    Monitor - Samsung S24C350BL
Now I'm waiting for the parts to arrive (and I still need to get a new keyboard+mouse).

Thanks for the help!
