I'm looking to build my own HTPC but then saw this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBund ... bo.1384037

Can I build a better one for the same or less?

Would be used strictly as an ethernet based htpc only to run HD streaming video, Blu-ray, and movies off of usb/hdd, all through HDMI.

Thoughts?

You're splitting hairs at that price point, but here you go: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1DqP9

Thanks.

My price point is ~600 but from everything I've seen on the forums, ~400-500 will do it.

I'm really new at building pcs and am not sure if I can do better for what I'll need/want to do.

Thoughts? Get it? Upgrade it?

Here's my take on a more or less "ideal" HTPC:

  • Any ol modern processor will have little to no issue with 1080p video. And since I doubt we'll have 4K stuff anytime soon, this should be good for a while.
  • Emphasis should be on storage space.
  • If possible, find low power parts to reduce how much energy the thing sucks up plus how little heat it dissipates. The last thing you want your HTPC to do is sound like a jet engine.

Amen! An old PC can be a good HTPC, though not necessarily aesthetic.
