Alright I checked out the Dream Machine for this year and I love it. One problem, I can't afford it. I did look over the parts of the build and I have been doing some research yet I have still not came to a conclusion. I am looking at the 4770K lga1150 at 3.5GHz Haswell CPU. The other choice is based on the Dream Machine, the i7 3930K SB-E at 3.2GHz. I am building a rig for gaming and as the Sep issue said, we should be seeing the new IB-E soon. The reason I went with the 1150 at first is I found the Asus maximus VI with an OC control and some other awesome gadgets. I am looking at more money in just CPU cost not to mention a MB, when I decide on one, for the 2011. Basically the MB for the 1150 is just pretty and I don't know which socket type will last longer with the constant upgrade trend and not become yesteryear's gadget in the next few years.. At the same time I need something that will allow me to have great performance in gaming without killing my bank account. The end date of this build will more than likely be around the time the new IB-E is released. I just don't know which is better and more future proof... 2011 or 1150. The last thing I want is to biuld a beast and have a better cpu released and be stuck with something that is old news. Thanks in advance!

1150 is the newest, so should outlast the others. amd tends to support their sockets much longer than Intel.

If you're not crunching numbers, doing a lot of video editing, or using Phootshop with massive images, then there's no point in getting a Socket 2011 system. Besides there are other things that Socket 2011 doesn't enjoy that 1150 does, such as native USB 3.0 and PCI-Express 3.0 support, more SATA 6 Gbps ports, and that none of the Socket 2011 processors have an internal GPU that you could use to accelerate some tasks... including video editing and compute.

And I'm under the belief still that if you're going for Socket 2011, either go big or go home. And those processors aren't very cheap.

Also everything will become "last year's tech" in a few years. I'm still using a i5-2500, and I don't feel like I need to upgrade.

I really appreciate your input. Two questions that your reply has brought up. 1) what did you mean by crunching numbers and 2) Do you think I will need the 2011 if I were to take classes in digital game design? I have an i7 SB and photoshop is nothing. the onlything my laptop doesn't have is a good gpu. thanks again!

Crunching numbers: any large scale calculation or simulation that needs to be done. You're probably not doing any of this if you have to ask what it is ;D

And you won't need it. Will it cut down on some things that require waiting (e.g., compiling, etc.)? Yes. But given this is an academic thing, probably not worthwhile anyway. Besides, in all honesty, you shouldn't be targeting the bestest platform ever. You'll be alienating users. And it's easier to scale up than it is to scale down.

True true, I have maxed my i7 out twice and that was with FL. So I'm thinking I will just stick to my original plan. Besides if I need to go up I can, like you said. Thanks man.
