Hi I'm looking to buy a gaming PC for around 1000 pounds. I will be over clocking both GPU and CPU. Room for upgrade in the future is a requirement.
In this money I will need to get:
Motherboard (Preferably ATX size)
CPU (Not sure if there is a point in getting an i7 or should I just stick with i5)
GPU (3D or Crossfire or SLI support preferable)
RAM (16 GB or 8GB with room for improvement)
Hard drive
Power Supply

I have not been following the latest hardware, so I have no idea what peripherals should I get in order to achieve good value for money. The amount of choice is just overwhelming. Please tell me what parts would you recommend and why.

Regards Daniel

AMD route - £989.85
Intel route - £1005.06

Notes:
  • Left you with a large enough power supply if you want to add another GPU
  • Intel has a habit of nixing motherboard sockets two generations later, so there's a good chance that the Intel path will not support the CPU architecture after the next.

Things of other note:
  • 8GB of RAM is good enough unless you're using applications that drink RAM like a marathon runner does water in the desert.
  • I can only recommend SLI or Crossfire if you're running a total resolution higher than 2560x1600. The video card I added will do fine on most games on max details at that resolution and still maintain over 60FPS.
