Hello everyone,

I am a graduate student in chemical engineering, building a new computer to be used in the office for applications including data/word processing, minor simulations, web browsing, and other applications. I'm planning on using a dual-monitor setup. I would also like to dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu to take advantage of LaTeX and some other Linux programs along with the Windows repertoire.

I've designed a computer to handle these needs (as well as a bit of future-proofing), and here's what I've got so far (all items found on Newegg):

NZXT Source 210 Black "Aluminum Brush / Plastic" ATX Mid Tower Case
AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core
MSI 970A-G46 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
EVGA 02G-P4-2645-KR GeForce GT 640 2GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready
Kingston HyperX 2x4GB DDR3 1333
WD Blue 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Rosewill Capstone-450 450W (80 plus gold)
Rosewill aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan

How does everything look? It doesn't need to be the highest-end machine, but I suppose a bit of wiggle room is always nice.

If you're not doing anything 3D related, you can nix the video card. Heck I might convince you to go with an Intel system instead, but it depends on what programs you're using to crunch data.

Also, consider running Ubuntu in a VM, that way you can have two environments going at the same time.
