I am interested in building the Linux game box featured in the March 2013 issue. This will be my first build from scratch so I have a few questions. When I researched the G.Skill Ripjaws ram I noticed many choices. What speed Ram do you recommend? I plan to dual boot with Win7 and Linux. If I add a SSD drive to this build for faster Windows booting will Ubuntu have problems with it? I could run two drives instead of partitioning. Any suggestions?

When selecting RAM, consider the following (in order)
  • Speed. DDR3-1600 is the fastest I can recommend, unless you're running an APU where speed directly affects GPU performance.
  • CAS latency. The lower the better. However, this isn't a deal breaker.
  • Price. Lower is better, obviously.

Also an SSD won't have any problems dual booting, but you should install Windows first, then Ubuntu. Installing Ubuntu installs GRUB, which will make multi-booting easier.
