My office computer is literally over ten years old. We've had a good run, but it's dying.

I have absolutely zero experience at building computers, so any insight would be appreciated. I'm looking to build a new office computer:

Use: Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access), Adobe Reader, etc.
(Note: I've had Adobe Photoshop on my computer for years, but never used it. I suppose I'd still like to have that capability, even if limited).

Budget: $400 - $450 (Shipping included, taxes extra)

Requirements: I'd really like to use an Intel i3 cpu of some sort.

Other Notes: 99% of files are saved to the main server. As such, would it make since to ditch the hard drive and go SSD alone?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Presumably just the box, no peripherals. And no OS---you will reuse your current?

Nope, can't in good conscience do it for a PC likely to be used another 10 years. Intel Core i3-3225 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W HD4000 graphics Dual-Core Processor; ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Micro ATX Motherboard; Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800) Memory (Yellow Heat Spreader); SilverStone PS08B Black High-strength plastic and meshed front panel MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case; XFX Core Edition PRO550W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE; SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD); LG 24X DVD Burner SATA

CPU incl. HSF, 3 yr warranty

How desperate are you for a new computer? At your budget, pre-built computers with a Core i3 are very few and far between. And while you could build something with a Core i3 or even a lower end Core i5 at your budget, it doesn't include the OS or peripherals (use http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... ec2012.png , just cut out the video card and use the rest of the budget on the CPU).

If you could push it up to $600 or so, excluding shipping and tax, it'll open up a lot more doors.

I've raised my budget to $500 - $550. Considering my current OS is XP, I think I'll upgrade to Windows 7 (the business is in the process of doing that anyway). But yes, that needs to be included in the budget. This is what I have so far:

Case & Power Supply - Used - $70 (Currently being used for identical motherboard and an i5-3570K CPU)
CPU - Intel i3-2100 3.1 Ghz Dual Core - $120
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V Micro ATX LGA1155 - $60
RAM - Crucial Ballistix Smart Tracer 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory - $30
SSD - Crucial M4 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk - $80
Drive - LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer - $18
OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) - $140

Total = $518 + Shipping & Taxes

Should anything be changed to eek out some better value or for better quality at the same or better price?

The SSD is only 64GB (20GB for OS + 20GB storage [that's about what I'm currently using] + 24GB to spare). Any issues with this? If it turns out not to be enough storage, I will be updating my personal computer with a 2TB HDD, and I could use the current 500GB HDD for my office build.
