Hi Everyone,

I need some help/recommendations for a new build. This will be my first build and have some doubts about my selections.

I'm planning on a gaming/virtualization desktop. Probably won't be doing any overclocking anytime in the foreseeable future but definitely a possibility.

My current thoughts

Fx-6300
XFX Core Edition Radeon HD 7850 2GB
CORSAIR HX series HX650 650W
8 gb ram, will upgrade to 16 in the future due to virtualization

still undecided on mobo, reading a ton of reviews on newegg and half are good and half bad
ssd 120 for os
1tb for secondary

I already have Win 7 64 pro
Rosewill Challenger Case

I'm trying to keep the budget under 750 if possible, everything leads me to AMD over Intel due to the price/extra cores etc

Any suggestions or comments are very welcome. I am not 100% on this build so any suggestions will definitely be heard. Also I prefer to get everything from Newegg due to shoprunner and shipping costs.

Thanks - Ryan

Welcome to the forum!

Overall, everything looks good - if you post the prices you have identified for your components, we might save you a few bucks if we happen to know of a better deal. You might want to try pcpartpicker.com. It will help you develop your list and provide you with an easy way to post it to the forum. It will also help you see how close to $750 you are.

Most people will tell you to go with Intel - no matter what; I agree with you - bang-for-buck I think AMD offers the best deals for the performance you get. As for the motherboard, I used the ASRock 960GM and it worked fine. It's cheap too.

Finally, if you can swing it, go for the 7870. It's about $25-30 more than the 7850 and is worth every penny.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply

Here are the prices so far with upgraded video card

MSI R7870-2GD5T/OC Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB $219 before 25 MIR
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB $65
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Desktop Processor FD6300WMHKBOX
CORSAIR HX series HX650 650W $219 for both with special from Newegg
SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $109

Sitting at $650 before any rebates etc

I looked at the mobo you suggested, the only thing that is a negative is the lack of ram slots. I want to be able to have up to 16gb in the future, so 4 slots would be preferred that way I wouldn't have to rebuy the ram to accommodate 16.

I also already have a spare 1tb drive laying around for storage

Any other recommendations or things I need to add while I'm in there?
