My friend's wanting to upgrade his PC a bit, his budget is only $300, less would be preferred, but he doesn't need a lot of things. We're building this for recording music as a weekend hobby and nothing else really outside the general use of a desktop. We don't need a super fast CPU or anything like that, just decent stuff all around..

Here is what he has already:
500w PSU
32" HDTV
Win7 Home x64
DVD+RW drive
Case
Keyboard
Mouse
1tb Sata HD
2.1 Logitech Speaker setup

Here is what we need:
CPU
RAM
MoBo
Sound Card(We already have a soundblaster card that sounds good for recording, but if there is a big difference in a better card or USB interface then we'll get one.)
1TB HD

2.1 Speaker setup (ONLY if budget will allow as he has an "ok" one already.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, the Speakers are optional and ONLY if there is room after getting everything else, I think I would rather spend the extra money on a better Sound Card/USB interface over getting speakers.

Is this possible for that kind of budget? I've been out of the PC market for some time now, and really hope I can get some advice from you guys on this.

Thanks in advance and if there's anything I left out, let me know!

From the recent Newegg email, it seems AMD is the way to go for cheap. How is this CPU/MoBo Combo? Or is it better to buy separately?

AMD Combo $129 - 3.6Dual

I'm thinking a Quad would perform worse than a faster Dual right? If only running a few things, never multitasking too much. Is there a better Intel deal?

That depends on just how picky he is in terms of sound quality. I use my USB DAC/Amp with a pair of Grado SR-125i headphones for listening to music. For reference the DAC/Amp I'm using is an Alpha Design Labs Stride which would completely shoot over your budget and it's just for playback, not for recording. For now I think we're best off focusing on the components of the PC itself:

CPU: Intel i3 3220 - $129.99
Motherboard: ASRock B75M-DGS - $57.99
RAM: Corsair 2x4GB DDR3-1600 - $48.99

So that brings your total to right about $230. I'm not sure which Creative card you have (not a big fan personally) but he may want to consider looking at an Asus Xonar DS or higher if he's willing to spend the cash.
