I'm planning on buying a new motherboard for my computer that I'm upgrading. I have a P4 3.0 GHZ ht northwood core socket 478 that I'm gonna keep for now and upgrade later when dual-core becomes a little more mainstream. I was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions on some good socket 478 mobo's that I could buy. I'm not really interested in DDR2 right now, Im gonna keep my radeon 9800 pro video card so I don't really need PCI-e right now either. Integrated Raid controller would be nice but not necessary. Any more questions feel free to ask. Thanks alot! :D

Depends on how much you want to spend. I would narrow the choices down to one of these:

Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (i875) - $175
Abit IC7-G MaxII (i875) - $142
Asus P4P800-E Deluxe (i865) - $113
Asus P4P800 SE (i865) - $92

The first two Canterwoods (i875) are the top of the line chipsets, but it's difficult to justify the pricetag over the Springdales (i865). Believe it or not, the $92 P4P800 SE is a stellar choice out of those above, despite the sub-$100 pricetag.

I have the Abit IC7-G mobo, and it's spectacular.

Ok Thanks. I'll check out those boards and see which one I like. I'll probably get back to you in a few weeks with the final specs of all the hardware I'm gonna buy for the upgrade.

i'd go with the Asus P4P800 SE. spending over 100 bucks on a socket that wont be able to go above what you have isnt all that smart. unless your not going to upgrade for a while i'd try to minimize spending now for the next big push.

Thats a great point. I have both the P4P800 SE and the P4P800-E deluxe, and the difference is only a few things like firewire (2) and 7.1 sound support. I really love the SE version and mine has been running an overclocked celeron (2.4 @2.7, air), stable for 5 months now. SE versions are below $100 and the best 478 deal on the market.
