I'm also not impressed with their customer service, so it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to recommend them to others.
The tech support at Asus has been lacking these last few months. There were times when I went there to get info about someone's mobo to find all of their support was down, this included links to the mobo manual. I understand places have days where they will be down, but I'm talking 2 to 3 weeks that most of the site was down. If your a new builder and need support, what are you going to do for 2 to 3 weeks?

A budget of $2500 builds a monster rig. Here's a rough outline that goes a bit overboard in some areas:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum - $139
AMD 3500+ Retail - $266
OCZ 1gb EL PC3200 2-3-2-5 - $149
OCZ Modstream 520w - $99
Leadtek 6800 Ultra PCI-E - $495
NEC 3520a DL-DVD Burner - $56
Lite-On CDRW/DVD Combo Drive - $37
Maxtor 250gb 16mb Diamondmax 10 - $155
Logitech MX1000 Wireless Mouse - $49
Dell 2001FP 19" LCD - $490-$590, depending on when you buy
Logitech Z-5500 Speakers - $284
That leaves you with just under $200 for a case and OS of your choice. As mentioned however, there's several places that can be trimmed to fit your needs - LCD monitor, speakers, video card, etc.
Keep in mind this is but a single outline out of many. With a budget of $2500, you're opening up quite a bit of options.
As One4ya says, the Dell monitor can be bought cheaper - keep your eye on
Tech Bargains and also go to Dell to sign up for email's from them. I get coupon codes all the time. I know MPC rated the Dell high, but I would rather go with a Sony with Xbright technology. Go to one of the major stores & check them out, the quality can't be beat.
I would also try to find a few extra $$ and upgrade the old box for your wife. Sharing computers suck, I wouldn't doubt the processor can get upgraded a little. You may also be able to put a better inexpensive MicroAtx mobo in there, then get her some updated ram, this is depending on what ram is in there. If it's PC2100, then I'd get her a new board. You could probably upgrade hers for $300.
