I have a 2.5Ghz Dual Core AMD 64 Opteron with 2G RAM and running XP Pro SP3 w/Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX that I use for some old games. Now my son wants to get a new computer and play newer games, unfortunately, the PC he wants is way too expensive. Would it be worth updating this old workhorse, or should I just put it out to pasture? This would be my first do it yourself project. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You could update your current rig, but building a new one would probably be the best thing to do. I would suggest upgrading your RAM to 4GB and then upgrading your video card to a Nvidia 550ti which should provide you with a big boost in performance but its hard to recommend parts if I don't know what kind of budget your on. You would need to upgrade your Power supply if you got the 550ti to 550 watt power supply if your current power supply is smaller than that.

Here's the price break down

Kingston 4GB of DDR2
$60

EVGA Nvidia 550Ti

$115

Power Supply
$65

Total upgrades $240

A new build would probably run about 600 bucks to about 800 bucks if you want a brand new entry level gaming PC

Thanks so much for the input! I'm going to follow both ideas, I'll let my son use his allowance and part time job money for the upgrade and then build the new one for Christmas and surprise him if his grades hold up. Thanks again for your input.

Sorry but I concur. All of your parts are outdated and replacing any one will just bottleneck that newer part.
