Okay, so here's my situation. I have 2 older Mobo/CPU sets. I want to put together the best combo of parts as a backup/experiment rig. I also plan to play some older games as well i.e. Quake 4, HL2 series, etc. I already have a fully decked out Ivy Bridge rig so this is just a project for fun. Here's a list of what I have to work with:

XFX Radeon HD6870 1GB
Rosewill RG530 530W PSU
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD
Cruicial M4 64GB SSD
300GB Velociraptor
ATX cases (several)

Those are the misc parts. Here are the mobos/CPUs

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6GHz 90nm Windsor w/Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro (Heatpipes, 92mm PWM fan)
2GB DDR2 800 2x1GB sticks
MSI K9AG Neo-2 Digital Socket AM2 (AMD 690G/SB600) 4 SATA 3gb ports, PCI-e x16, supports AHCI

OR...

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5500 2.8GHz 45nm Wolfdale w/OEM Foxconn tower style cooler (3 heatpipes, 80mm PWM fan)
4GB DDR2 667 2x2GB sticks
MSI G31TM-P21 LGA 775 (Intel G31/ICH7) 4 SATA 3gb ports, PCI-e X16, supports IDE mode ONLY

My initial gut feeling is to go with the Pentium. But I like the AHCI for the SSDs and I think the CPUs are pretty closely matched. Which would you choose to build with and why?

The highest performance goes to the Pentium. It's not the same one, but http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/32?vs=98 will show you the Athlon versus a Pentium E5300.

Tom's says the Intel has the edge:

But that is Tom's.

Anandtech has them kinda similar for gaming, but that's with an E5200 chip:

If I'm not mistaken, your E5500 should give a decent overclock, so why not play with that? You can stick in that DDR2 800 RAM and use one or both SSDs even without AHCI (but you are sure it's not in bios?).

Why? No real reason other than the overclock.

OK. So I ended up loaning my E5500 rig to a friend for a few months so he can get by. I have another question. I have this rig running right now:

MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital Mobo (Socket AM2/AM2+, AMD 690G/SB600)
Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (Windsor Core) @2.6GHz
2GB DDR2 800 RAM
60GB Vertex 2 SSD (OS) 300GB Maxtor HDD (Data)
Radeon HD6870 1GB GPU
630W 80 plus PSU
Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

Will I be able to game on this rig? The most demanding game I would be running would be Modern Warfare 3. Others include Half-Life 2, Dead Space, Mass Effect 1-3. I know I won't be able to use AA, but what about these games @ 1920x1080?

So if I understand you correctly. It will probably work, but don't expect miracles right?
