Well here is my dilemma;

There are a few good brands out there when it comes to speakers these days with the likes of Klipsch, Logitech and Cambridge Soundworks pretty well rounding out the top three.

I have recently put together quite a nice media setup. The speakers are really going to add the icing to the cake, so to speak.

The following is a rundown of my existing setup to give you a better idea as to which speaker set would best suit me;

Antec Sonata Case
MSI Neo2 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2x Samsung 512MB DDR 400 (Dual)
XFX Geforce 6600GT AGP 8x
SB Audigy 2 ZS
WD raptor 36GB SATA 10,000 rpm
Seagate Barracuda 200GB SATA 7,200 RPM
Sony CDRW 40x
Sony DVD+-RW DL 16x
15" Samsung 151s LCD monitor
Infocus X1 DLP projector w/61" 16:9 screen
Logitech cordless optical combo
SnapStream Firefly Remote
*****Creative Labs Desktop Theatre DTT2200(5.1)*****

So, as you can see, the speakers are a bit on the weak side when compared to the rest of the system.

So far I have two replacement sets in mind.

1) Creative MegaWorks 550 - $229.00 CAD

http://www.creative.com/products/produc ... roduct=240

2) Logitech Z5500 - $389.99 CAD

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/produ ... ENTID=9486

The price difference is quite substantial (1 Point for Creative). I also really have no need for an external decoder (2 Point’s for Creative). I do however like the look of the Logitech’s (1 Point Logitech)

Bottom of the line is performance. Both are rates at 500w RMS and they both have similar SNR ratings (Creatives is actually better, whether that is true or not??? Who knows).

Since I will use my Audigy to decode DD and DTS tracks, would it be wise to settle for the Creatives?

Any ideas or comments would be great!!!

I'd rather have the Logitechs--generally better sound quality than Creative. However, neither sound all that spectacular, and the Z5500s don't use real speaker cable (huge drawback, if you ask me).

I have a set of Z-680s and they sound all right. I'd like to have something that sounds better, though, and if I were looking into buying speakers now (I only paid $50 for these) I'd save my money and invest in a decent receiver and some decent [real] speakers.

The good news is that the Z-5500s are much cheaper from Newegg. That's where I ordered mine. I think it was 321 shipped overnight. The even better news is that the ones I recieved use normal speaker wire. Not the speaker wire to RCA male plugs. If you don't mind spending the little bit extra for the Logitechs over the Creatives, then definitely go for it! Even if you do the 5 day shipping (right now only $0.99). Only $270.98 w/5 day shipping right now... what are you waiting for!

Remeber, Newegg does not ship to Canada unfortuneatley. The only decent online store in canada is NCIX, their price is 358 hwoever they charge like $60 to ship.

In term of performance, the creatives post much better specs,

Creative

Audio Specifications
Signal-to-Noise Ratio 99dB << Better
Speakers Rated Power 70 watts per channel (5 channels) << Better
Subwoofer Rated Power 150 watts << Slightly Less
Frequency Response 25Hz to 20kHz << Better

Logitech

Total RMS power: 505 watts RMS
Satellites: 317 watts RMS (2 x 62 W front, 2 x 62 rear, 69 W center)
Subwoofer: 188 watts RMS
Total Peak power: 1010 watts
Maximum SPL: >115 dB
Frequency response: 33 Hz — 20 kHz
SNR: >93.5 dB, typical 100

What do you think?

You could just get the z680s. Remember they were top of the line before x5500s came out.

what is the model # for your Z5500? I want the ones that use normal speaker wires like my Z680.

Why would Newegg ship to Puerto Rico yet not Canada? Aren't we their "trading partners"?
