I'm trying to replace the hard drive on an old dell dimension 4700 pc. The current one is a Seagate 40GB, Serial ATA 7200RPM, 8MB cache, the model number seems to be dell specific "#2m327".

I'm looking for something a bit bigger like 160GB and have a few questions.

1. Any SATA hard drive should work as a replacement, or are there compatibility concerns?
2. Any suggestions for an ~160GB hard drive, 7200RPM that would work as a replacement that's not too expensive?

Hard drives went up in price a few months ago, and you will not save a great deal, if any, by getting a drive below 320GB.

Western Digital has been making very good drives for years. I have tried just about every drive on the market and WD has been one of the best.

320GB Western Digital drive:

I can't find any concrete numbers on this "intellipower" RPM, some say 5200, some say 7200. I don't like that I can't find any definite answers on how slow/fast intellipower drives are.

I'm looking for something around 7200rpm at the minimum and I don't trust this "intellipower" that doesn't give you any real specs, any other options? Anyone had any experience with this drive compared to a 7200rpm drive?

I found this, it has some problems with being DOA apparently so I'm a little wary of it but at least I know what I'm paying for.

I do not like to suggest Western Digital green drives, however, you indicated that you were short on cash, or something like that. Probably the reason that you could not find info on speed is because it changes speed.

After I wrote the above sentence I looked this up for you on WD's site. For some reason it was a pain for it to get started at my end, so I stopped it and re-started, no problem with the download after that. Here is the link to the PDF:

Western Digital Black are the best, followed by Western Digital Blue, WD Green is a distant 3rd, and can be replaced by a different brand.

This is the drive I would put in the computer if it were mine, and needed a small drive:
