Maximum PC

I'm trying to install a different AGP video card into a friends computer (that they let their kids use--the old video card died, and I had a spare GeForce 6200 sitting around, which is an 8x card).

Anyway, I don't know much about the board, but I think it only has a 4x AGP slot. Will the 8x card work in that slot, or will something get burnt out (the board and/or the card)? It's been ages since I've deal with AGP, but can't remember anymore....

(The board/processor is an Intel 850 chipset with a P4 1.8 GHz--socket 423---that uses Rambus memory. I am just not sure if the board has an 8x or 4x controller.)

The only thing of concern is the reference voltage AGP cards take and what the AGP slot provides. However, the slot is usually keyed. If the card doesn't take the reference voltage, it won't fit. Otherwise the speed is forward and backwards compatible.
