I'd like to know all of the considerations to look at before deciding on a PSU. I know how to calculate needed Watts but most everything else is a gray area for me.

For example, Newegg has listed under the Compatible: drop-down list,

ATX 12V 1.2
ATX 2.03
ATX 2.03 & ATX 12V 1.1
ATX/BTX
etc.

I'm building a system for someone using a SOLTEK SL-K890Pro-939 and I'm really not sure what to buy. I usually buy Antec 400-500 Watt PSUs and do fine but I'd like to be a little more knowledgable.

Read reviews and shootouts from reputable online sources. From stated positives and negatives you can get an idea about what’s important.

buy either the Antec Neopower, OCZ Modstream, or OCZ Powerstream and you will be 100% set.

not the current truepower line. they dont support all the new specs. once the truepower 2 line is in stores, then they will be good again.

If you really want to be certain about the PSU, then the ATX 2.0X spec should be what you're aiming for, unless I'm mistaken. However, a PCI-E board should be safe with the older ATX 12V 1.2 spec if the supply is stable and powerful enough.

Antec 400-500W PSUs should definitely be able to handle it. Otherwise, I would go for the Enermax alternative.
