Ok, if my laptop ever sells I will be getting a nice gaming rig. Under 1200 is the budget, and I already have the Samsung 710N. Here is what I was thinkin:

Case: Chenming Black Server (Like the Antec Server Cases 1040B)
PS: Thermaltake 480w
Mobo: Asus A8N DLX
CPU: 3200 939
RAM: Corsair ValueRam (1gb, 512x2)
GPU: XFX 6600gt
HDD: Seagate SATA 200gb
DVDRW: LiteOn 16x dual layer
SC: Audigy 2
TUNER: Sabrent
KB/M: Wireless Msft Optical Desktop

Any additions/subtractions? I do video editing for projects and the like, and I like good sound, but if onboard is nice enough I could always do without, have they gotten better? And with the extra 70 or so, go with a 3500 or get Corsair XMS? Thanks,

The whole point of getting an SLI motherboard is to get TWO GeForce 6XXX, SLI compatible. Getting a single GeForce 6600 GT is decent for a gaming rig (still TWO GeForce 6600 GTs are slower than a single GeForce 6800 GT), but not good enough for today's standard "gaming" rigs.

Dump the ASUS SLI for the GIGABYTE "GA-K8N Ultra-9" NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset Motherboard, save $65 there and invest in better video card, like an ATI Radeon X800XL Video Card, PCI Express, 256MB DDR ($299 at your local COMPUSA), the X800XL is pretty much identical in hardware and performance to the GeForce 6800 GT.

SLI is nice but for your budget, I wouldn't even dream of SLI, besides is very pointless to me. Spending close to $700 just for bragging not a very smart idea. The hard drive is a very good choice, manufacturer gives you a 5 year warranty on it.
I only use Thermaltake PSU because of their nice little feature "Automatic Temperature Control", so that's a good choice.
Corsair Value ram is fine, I guess, but I would recommend memory with better timings, like the PDP SYSTEMS Memory Dual Channel Kit with Cas Latency 2-3-2-5-T1 (memory out of stock but they get it very quick, but it sells very quick also).

I'd change to that....................

Nah, don't go cheap on the case. You want to make sure it has adequate cooling and it's easy to work with. That case you selected looks fine. One of my favorites is the Thermaltake Tsunami or Soprano (Soprano would fit the budget).

I say you have a very balanced setup.

pretty decent system. looks good and the videocard and hdd are good choices. the seagate hdds are pretty fast and quiet. also the performance of the XFX 6600GTs are awesome.

thanks for the RAM thing. And as far as GPU goes, I can't buy two now, so I was going for the one 6600gt which is (at least I thought) pretty excellent preformance for the money. Then later (in maybe a yr or so?) I'll upgrade the ram and add another 6600gt and be good to go... So I think I will try to save up some money and get a 3500 to increase life span and wait for the audigy 2. Thanks,

-Chris

better prices:

all are good companies

https://host201.ipowerweb.com/~hwrebuil ... b2e7e518fb

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... ode=360223

better sound card and comes with:
# Star Wars® Jedi Knight®: Jedi Academy™
# Halo® Combat Evolved
# Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness™
# Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® 3: Raven Shield™
# Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® (Includes 3 additional missions)

you should also invest in a good heatsink and overclock that bad boy

you might want to get the msi 6600gt its cheaper and with the money saved you can get a arctic silencer 3(may be 4) and the msi one comes with a massive bundle

about the msi... I read a match up off of anandtech and they didn't like the msi, thought it was flimsy... 2nd place recommendation was the xfx...

the only reason the msi one was worse was the POS heatsink if you look closely the are both exact nvidia reference models.
cept the xfx has dual dvi while the msi has 1 dvi and 1 15-pin d-sub

better review i hate anandtech
