The majority of drives out now are fairly the same overall in speeds. Some recommended drives include Plextor (my personal favorite), NEC, Sony, Lite-On, and LG.

Just to make sure: Are you looking to burn CDs and DVDs? Just looking to read DVDs and CDs?

Well, I plan to have two optical drives with two purposes. One to play DVDs and stuff while the other is to aid in burning and read CDs.

In that case:

- the DVD-Rom I recommend a Sony. They pick up the most detail out of the CDs and DVDs out of most of the drives.

-the DVD burner see the list of manufacturers in my first post.

Cool. So the Sony DRU-720 should fit the bill, and I'll continue looking for the Plextor drive that MaxPc raved about being the fastest yet. Would you know how much noise these drives create?

I have the Plextor PX-716 and it's fairly quiet.

i believe a majority of CDR's are maxed out at 52X. My preference remains on the 52X TDK VeloCD for it's lightning speed!
It's about a year old and has NEVER failed in the burning process. Although the drive's jetlike sound leaves me a bit concerned about its high RPM. I often wonder about the disc flying off the spindle. Whenever I utilize the drive, i wear a full face mask for protection from flying UFO's...

if this is the type of drive your looking for, grab the TDK5200B and put on the weed-whacker safety shield, because TDK has refined the art of CD burning to unprecedented levels. Featuring Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) burning technology, it records discs faster than other drives with the same speed rating, especially when burning less than a full disc. Complete with TDK's world class buffer underrun technology, the 52X Internal veloCD delivers unrivaled reliability and total recording satisfaction. There are no butts about it, it kicks ass like Bruce Lee!
